Lixouri Bay Beach Club is a small, personal beachfront hotel on the west side of Kefalonia, with views across the Ionian Sea and direct access to its own wide sandy beach. It is a relaxed, sociable place with a loyal following of returning guests: a swimming pool, a beach bar, a taverna serving fresh seasonal food, and spacious family rooms, apartments and villas.

The heart of the club is its RYA-recognised watersports centre. Guests can use dinghies, windsurfers, wing-foil gear, paddleboards, kayaks and road bikes free of charge, with a friendly beach team on hand to rig the kit, offer tips and keep everyone safe. The sheltered bay, with gentle winds and a shelving beach, suits beginners and families especially well.

Most studios and loft apartments have sea views, but not all, so please ask for a sea view when you enquire. The Family Suites all face the sea. Villas nearby are also available as part of the Villa Club.

Watersports and activities

Free use of all the watersports kit, bikes and fitness sessions is part of the stay. Guests just turn up at the beach, complete a short safety briefing on the first morning, and the beach team will rig the kit and set them off. Optional group coaching sessions run through the week to help everyone get going and then progress.

The kit is from names like RS Sailing, Starboard, RRD and Severne, and includes the RS Neo, RS Zest, RS Quest and RS CAT 14 dinghies, plus an RS 500 for experienced sailors. Foil boards are only available at Lixouri Bay. Qualified RYA staff run the beach with rescue boats on the water, and buoyancy aids are compulsory.

Conditions: light mornings suit swimming, paddleboards and kayaks, and an afternoon breeze, often force 3 to 4, builds for sailing and windsurfing. A large private beach with gently shelving access makes it a good place to learn.

Food and drink

The club taverna is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with classic Greek dishes, seasonal salads, freshly grilled fish and a club burger, and it caters for dietary needs and fussy eaters. The beach bar serves snacks, ice creams and cocktails during the day. Breakfast is a buffet with fresh fruit, yoghurt, pastries and a cooked option. On the club board plan, guests have breakfast every day plus four buffet-style evening meals, including a Greek night and a barbecue night, with the other evenings free to eat at the taverna or at the beach tavernas nearby. The villas are self-catering.

Families

There is no children’s club or childcare, but the beach team run “meet your mates” sessions and water-based games for different age groups through the week, plus a Toddler Splash session for under-fives with a parent present. There is no minimum age for the beach, and parents are asked to stay close to younger children. Teenagers have plenty to do with sailing, winging, volleyball and yoga, and Lixouri town is a short taxi ride away. There is no kids’ pool.

Getting there

Fly to Kefalonia airport, about three hours from the UK, and take a taxi or minibus along the bay for around an hour to the club. It is a good idea to pre-book an arrival transfer with a meet-and-greet, as the airport can be busy. Many guests return by taking a short shuttle to Lixouri, the 20-minute ferry across the bay to Argostoli, and a taxi to the airport.
